While teaching 7th Grade Science, one of my favorite science standards focused on plant and animal adaptations and biodiversity. The grasses, forbs and animals of Iowa’s Tallgrass Prairie addressed this standard beautifully. It was very rewarding to me to help students understand the history and importance of the Tallgrass Prairie that once covered Iowa. I find myself adding aspects of the prairie to many of my pieces. This piece is beyond just a nod - it is a flat out love note to the prairie! The Purple Coneflower, Butterfly Milkweed and Black-Eyed Susan are among my favorites that I’ve included in this piece. After I’ve completed most pieces that include nature, my husband always asks “where’s the hawk? or squirrel? or name-your-animal!” so this time I included the hummingbird for him : )
